The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Consider in detail the portrayal of black Americans in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Think about the portrayal of Jim. Twain’s characterization of Jim changes throughout the novel. Blog Questions: Is the novel “racist”? If the novel is racist, should it be read in schools? Is Jim at any point used as the butt of other’s jokes? If so, is this racist, simply a legitimate humorous technique, or a revelation of others’ character traits?

  1. Honestly I don’t see the “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” to be racist at all. Of course because of the time and setting racist undertones can definitely be picked up by reading the story. Also the whole deal if the novel being racist and being banned in some school is ridiculous because not only is it a good story but it is to open the eyes of people to show how minorities were treated in that time. I’m also leaning towards this legitimate humor technique because it does make sense to keep the humor in this novel, and at the time that could have been the only way for it to be perceived.

  2. The novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is not racist. To create a counterargument, the only reason it would be racist would be because of the use of the word "nigger". This book should be read in schools because it gives students of this generation a chance to understand how people lived back then and how African Americans were treated. Jim is used as the butt of other's jokes. I feel as if the only way it could be racist is how the joke was told. These jokes are definitely a revelation of others' character traits. It is how the people of that time felt towards African Americans.

  3. The novel is far from racist. In order for the novel to be racist, it shoudl be the novel's theme. Or at least part of its theme, it is not at all included in the theme; and no where in the book does it omply that it is the theme. The use of the word is a revelation of others' character traits. The only reason racist words are used by other people, and these people are racist. So the use of the word is explaining what other character's traits are.

  4. This novel is not at all racist. The book is only demonstrating the way people during that time era viewed African Americans. It is a way to develop other characters and show how the racism of the time affected the characters and their racist comments. Jim is used as the butt of the joke to show and create an idea of how the other characters were raised and grew up within an racist community.
